Full-time, 2 year fixed term (possibility of renewal): $104.6K-$124.2K p.a. (as at January 2012 including salary, leave loading and up to 17% super)

The University of Sydney’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences has a proud history of intellectual rigour and offers a vibrant research and teaching environment. The School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry (SOPHI) is one of five schools in the Faculty, made up of the departments of Archaeology, Classics and Ancient History, Gender and Cultural Studies, History and Philosophy. The School brings together an exciting group of academics and students who participate in a wide array of undergraduate and postgraduate programs. It is home to some of the leading researchers and teachers in Australia and the world, as well as regularly hosting prominent visitors and international colloquia.

The China Studies Centre has been established to coordinate the University’s cross-disciplinary research and teaching activities. Currently over 130 members of staff at our university are engaged in academic work on China The China Studies Centre delivers postgraduate coursework and research training programs; organises and supports research on China; and develops China-related outreach activities. We currently have sixteen academic groups covering the arts, business studies, education, health studies, law, sciences, social sciences, and technology. One of these academic groups is concerned with China’s archaeology and ancient history. The Centre also has three major fields of study for development: business development; public health; and social change.

The China Studies Centre and School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry (SOPHI) currently seek to appoint a Lecturer in Ancient Chinese History. The appointee will
- be located in both the Centre and a disciplinary-based department within SOPHI according to your specialisation: ancient history, archaeology, history or philosophy
- teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels including a unit of study in Ancient Chinese History within the MA programme of the China Studies Centre, and appropriate units in Ancient Chinese History at undergraduate level in SOPHI
- assist with the development of the Centre’s teaching and research programs
- undertake research, including the pursuit of research grants and publication in journals of high standing
- contribute to academic administration in the Centre and SOPHI.

This appointment is a two-year fixed term appointment with the possibility of renewal for a further two years, subject to funding.
