IndependentdocumentaryfilmproductioninsidethePeople’sRepublicofChinahasflourishedinthepasttwentyyearsandshowsnosignofabating,despiteincreasedpublicandpoliticalattentiontoChinesefilmmakersandtheirprojects.“SeeingChina”willexploretherangeofcontemporarypracticesindocumentaryfilmmakinginChinatodaywithscreeningsofrecentdocumentaries,mostselectedfromtheYunfestcatalogue.Twoday-longworkshopsattheUniversityofTechnology,Sydney,ledbyChinesefilmmakers,scholars,andtheleadcuratorofYunfest,willprovideanopportunityforresearcherstoexploredocumentaryfilmmakinginChinaasasocial,cultural,andpoliticalphenomenon.AlistoffilmstobescreenedwillbeavailableontheUTSChinaResearchCentrewebsiteinApril2012(china.uts.edu.au);filmsunderconsiderationincludePetition(ZhaoLiang,2009),Apuda(HeYuan,2010),andWhentheBoughBreaks(JiDan,2010).
Wearenowinvitingscholarsandpostgraduatestudentstoparticipateintheworkshopseriestobeheldon4-5June2012atUTS.Weareespeciallyinterestedinbringingtogetheradynamic,interdisciplinarygroupofparticipants(fromfieldssuchas–butnotlimitedto–ChinaStudies,MediaStudies,Anthropology,Sociology,FilmStudies,andJournalism),andwewelcomeacademicsaswellasfilmmakerstoapply.Allworkshopparticipantsarehighlyencouragedtoattendthefilmscreenings,whichwilltakeplacebeforeandaftertheworkshopdates.LimitedtravelfundingwillbeavailabletosupportECRsandpostgraduatestudentstravelingfromoutsideSydney.WorkshopswillbeheldinEnglish;someknowledgeofMandarinChineseishelpful,butnotrequired.
Thefirstworkshop,on4June2012,willinvestigatethecurrentconditionsofindependentdocumentaryfilmproductionandcirculationinChinatoday,withafocusonthequestionofactivismandaestheticsindocumentaryfilmmaking.ThisworkshopwillbejointlyledbyDrYiSicheng(Yunfestcurator),MrHeYuan(filmmaker),andDrLukeRobinson(LecturerinFilmandMediaStudies,UniversityofNottingham).Thesecondworkshop,on5June,willexploredocumentaryasaresearchmethodandwillincludespecialscreeningsofstudentworkfromChina.MrLiXin(LecturerinMediaProduction,YunnanArtsInstitute)andDrJennyChio(PostdoctoralResearchFellow,UTS)willleadthisworkshop.Allparticipantswillbeexpectedtoparticipateinbothworkshops,inordertoencouragethegreatestpossibleexchangeofideasandtodevelopresearchcollaborationopportunities.
WehopetofacilitateintensiveconversationsondocumentaryfilmpracticeinthecontextofcontemporaryChina,culturalstudies,andmediaproduction.Tobeconsideredforthisworkshopseries,applicantsshouldsubmitby15April2012:
